Hillsborough deputies: Woman kills boyfriend before fleeing to Alabama, turning gun on herself

The woman was found in her vehicle by deputies in Alabama after a warrant was issued for her arrest, authorities said.

TOWN 'N' COUNTRY, Fla. — A woman is dead after allegedly killing her boyfriend before taking her own life while on the run, authorities said.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office says they responded to the scene at 7 a.m. Wednesday in the area of Shellgrove Court and Lynfield Drive in Town 'N' Country where they found a man dead. He was later identified as 50-year-old Kelbys Avila.

Upon further investigation, deputies say his girlfriend, 58-year-old Maira Pacheco Nuñez, shot and killed him before fleeing the scene in a car.

Detectives later obtained an arrest warrant for Nuñez for second-degree murder with a firearm.

About an hour after the warrant was issued, the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office in Alabama reportedly found Nuñez's vehicle and began a traffic stop.

During this time, deputies said she would end her own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

"This is a tragic and heartbreaking situation. Our hearts ache for the family of this man whose life was tragically ended," Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement. "Violence is never an option. To anyone facing or anyone who suspects domestic violence, please remember: help is available, and you are not alone."

HCSO is currently investigating this incident.
