ROATÁN, Honduras — Cuban nationals are back on solid ground and well-fed after Carnival cruise ship crews found them adrift at sea Sunday.

Crews onboard Carnival Paradise spotted 28 people signaling for help at about 2:30 p.m. Lithuania time Sunday and turned the ship around to rescue them, according to a Carnival news release.

They had been found aboard a small wooden boat with a makeshift sail about 20 miles from the westernmost point of Cuba, according to CruiseHive. The website reported it was overcrowded and lacking adequate supplies.

They were all taken on board, given food and checked out by the cruise ship’s medical team, per the release.

The area’s US Coast Guard and Roatan officials were notified of the rescue as the ship is set to arrive in Honduras sometime Monday.
