LITHIA, Fla. — Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office deputies charged a man with several counts Tuesday after he allegedly assaulted a jogger following an attempted robbery of a gas station.

Deputies arrested 31-year-old Matthew Green Jr. Tuesday after he was involved in two instances of robbery, a Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office news release said.

In the first instance, a caller claimed Green walked into a 7-Eleven at about 1:48 a.m. Tuesday located at 13411 Fishhawk Boulevard and demanded money from the cash register. The employee refused to comply with his demands, prompting Green to run out of the gas station. He allegedly claimed to have a gun.

Another report said Green assaulted a jogger not too long after, where he allegedly strangled the person and left them unconscious before running off with their cell phone.

After an investigation, deputies located Green at a home on Juliano Drive in Riverview, where he was found hiding behind a washer and dryer, officials said. He was arrested without incident.

Green faces charges including two counts of violation of parole, two counts of violation of parole robbery with a gun or deadly weapon and battery by strangulation, among others.

"Our community should rest easier tonight knowing that a dangerous individual, intent on terrorizing innocent lives with acts of violence, is no longer free to roam our streets," Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement.

The investigation is ongoing.
