Man charged with murder after shooting wife, chasing ambulance in St. Pete, police say

St. Pete police said Devin Hansen was arguing with his wife before the shooting.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A shooting at a St. Pete home turned into an ambulance chase early Thursday morning as emergency crews drove the victim to a local hospital, according to police.

Now, a man is charged with the murder of his wife, officers said.

It started at 10:25 p.m. Wednesday at a house on 29th Avenue North near US-19 and 66th Street North. Officials said 28-year-old Devin Hansen and his wife, 35-year-old Yasmin Grijalva, were there visiting family when the two got into an argument.

During the argument, police say Hansen shot Grijalva.

By the time medical response crews arrived at the scene, Hansen had already left in a black Cadillac CTS, according to a news release.

Police said Grijalva was put into an ambulance in "critical condition" and an officer joined her as they rode to the hospital.

During the drive, Hansen, in the black Cadillac, started chasing the ambulance on the interstate, police said.

Nearby officers pursued the car in an effort to stop the threat to the emergency vehicle. Law enforcement followed Hansen about 11 miles south of where the shooting initially happened, about a 20-minute drive, before the Cadillac crashed into "large landscaping rocks" on 54th Avenue South near Lakewood High School, the agency said.

Hansen was arrested at the scene of the crash.

In an update sent just after 8 a.m. Thursday, police said Grijalva died at the hospital as a result of her injuries.

As a result, Hansen has been charged with 1st-degree murder, fleeing and eluding and domestic battery.

The investigation continues.

Editor's note: A previous version of this story had Yasmin Grijalva's last name spelled Grijalua, per the police report. Law enforcement has since released the corrected spelling, reflected in this report.
