HAINES CITY, Fla. — A 6-year-old boy is recovering in the hospital after getting hit by a car while exiting the school bus, according to a Haines City spokesperson.

It happened just after 4:15 p.m. at the intersection of Chanler Drive and U.S. 17.

Units from the Haines City Fire Department, Polk County Fire Rescue and Polk County Sheriff's Office responded after a caller reported that a boy getting off the bus was hit by a vehicle.

Emergency responders determined that the 6-year-old did not have any major injuries. The child was transported to a local hospital. The driver was also looked at as a precaution.

The Haines City spokesperson said the driver was not complying with officers on the scene regarding the crash investigation.

In an update Thursday morning, the sheriff's office said 67-year-old Robert Reedy was arrested and charged with DUI after giving breath samples that registered well above the legal limit.
