Brush at Mosaic fertilizer plant in Riverview reignites after last night's blaze

Hillsborough County Fire Rescue said all fires have been extinguished. Crews will set up an ongoing "fire watch" to monitor the site.

RIVERVIEW, Fla. — Hillsborough County Fire Rescue firefighters have extinguished a brush fire that reignited Tuesday afternoon near the Mosaic fertilizer plant following last night's massive blaze.

As they continue to put out hotspots, crews will set up an ongoing "fire watch" to monitor conditions at the site. One HCFR firefighter was transported to this hospital and is stable Tuesday afternoon.

Firefighters responded around 10:30 a.m. to the facility, located at 8813 U.S. Highway 41 in Riverview, where a brush fire reignited due to gusty winds and the extreme heat left over from last night’s fire.

One of the polyethylene pipes involved in last night’s fire ignited in the most recent blaze. Just as crews put out the first pipe fire, a second polyethylene pipe caught fire but has since been extinguished.

Firefighters work to put out a fire at Mosaic on Tuesday, March 26, at the Mosaic facility in Riverview.

Emergency response crews responded to a reported “heavy fire” at the plant at 5:47 p.m. Monday. Patches of grass and "high-density plastic pipes" caught fire, which caused black smoke to cloud the sky.

The fire was put out six hours later, and crews remained on the scene to monitor and check for any “hot spots.”

Mosaic emergency response, the Florida Forestry Service and HCFR worked in tandem to get the blaze under control.

Fire officials said there is no threat to public safety.
