The sign says "Howard Frankland" but so many Tampa natives swear it was called the "Howard Franklin" — at least it used to be, right? It turns out it's not just the Mandela Effect. One viewer sent us an old postcard showing the spelling as "Franklin." The Deeper Dive: The bridge was the brainchild of William Howard FranklandWilliam Howard Frankland, spelled "L-A-N-D," was an influential Tampa businessman who owned gas stations and tire companies. He pushed for the construction of the bridge, which began in 1957. But, it took a little while for the bridge to shake its dangerous reputation. There were so many deadly crashes on the bridge at the beginning that it was nicknamed “Howard Frankenstein” and the “Car-Strangled Spanner.” 1.
