St. Pete police: Man dies after being hit by car; bystanders stop driver from running away

He was later arrested and charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A man is dead after he was hit by a car on 34th Street North and 32nd Avenue North, according to the St. Petersburg Police Department.

It happened around 10:30 p.m. Monday. A white Ford Mustang driven by 27-year-old Randy Peterson Jr. was driving north on 34th Street North in the median lane, the department said in a release.

At the same time, officers say 52-year-old Alija Boskovic was crossing the street and walked into Peterson's path.

Boskovic was hit and died at the scene, according to police.

After hitting Boskovic, officers say Peterson ran off but was stopped by bystanders who detained him until they could arrive. Peterson was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death.

34th Avenue between 30th and 35th avenues was shut down in both directions overnight into the early morning hours but has since reopened.

Police say the department's investigation is still ongoing.
