ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A car crashed into a parked trailer on the Howard Frankland Bridge, pushing it into a man standing alongside it and causing him to fall into the water below, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
The man was standing outside his Nissan Frontier with a small trailer on the inside lane of the bridge at the time of the crash around 8 p.m. Monday, troopers said.
Another car came up and tried to get out of the lane to avoid hitting the Nissan, but its driver hit the trailer. Troopers say the impact caused the trailer to hit the pedestrian, tossing him over the edge and into Old Tampa Bay.
A third car came up and hit the back of the car that hit the trailer, FHP said.
The man who fell into the water was recovered by an agency on a watercraft, troopers said. His condition is said to be listed as "trauma," with no other additional detail available.
Traffic remained slow going on the Howard Frankland Bridge for several hours. All lanes have since reopened to traffic.
