MULBERRY, Fla. — The Polk County Sheriff's Office is looking for answers in what led up to a man's death in Mulberry Friday morning.
Deputies say they found 41-year-old John McCoy's body outside the Mulberry Phosphate Museum at 101 1st Street SE after a 911 call came in from a man walking to work.
During an investigation, deputies determined McCoy suffered from "obvious trauma to the head" and are looking into the possibility that he was hit by a passing car.
"Detectives worked all day Friday, and continue to work in order to determine what happened in the final minutes of his life. At this point in the investigation, we know that Mr. McCoy suffered blunt-force injuries, but we aren't positive how he got them," Sheriff Grady Judd said.
According to a release, McCoy's sister, whom he spent time with the night before his death, claimed he was smoking marijuana and appeared to be paranoid when he left.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Polk County Sheriff's Office at 863-298-6200.
