LAKELAND, Fla. — Several Tampa Bay area counties announced they will be canceling classes ahead of Hurricane Dorian.
Schools were already closed Monday because of the Labor Day holiday.
- Pinellas County schools: Pinellas County schools will be closed and all school-related activities will be canceled Tuesday. Normal operations are expected to resume Wednesday.
- Hardee County schools: Hardee County will re-open Wednesday after being closed on Tuesday.
- Hillsborough County schools: Hillsborough County schools will be closed on Tuesday. An official announcement regarding whether schools will re-open Wednesday should be made by 5 p.m. Tuesday.
- Citrus County schools: Citrus County schools will be closed through Tuesday for Hurricane Dorian. Messages will be sent to families via phone and social media, regarding return to normal procedure.
- Highlands County schools: Highlands County schools will be closed September 3 and 4. The closures apply to the school day and other activities. Updates are available at the Schools Board of Highlands County Facebook page.
- Hernando County schools: The Hernando County School District will close all schools and district offices on Tuesday. No changes have yet been announced for Wednesday, but the District said it will keep residents updated while monitoring the weather.
- Pasco County schools: All Pasco County schools, PLACE childcare programs, Beyond-the-Bell after-school programs, and offices will be closed on Tuesday. The District said Pasco County schools are expected to re-open Wednesday.
- Polk County Schools: Polk County announced it will be canceling its classes for students through Wednesday in response to Hurricane Dorian. Schools are expected to resume for Polk on Thursday. These closures do not impact charter or private schools. All Polk County school activities, athletics, and other school-sponsored events will be canceled through Wednesday, as well.
There will also be college closures around the state:
- Broward College is closing all campuses and partnership centers Tuesday. The College expects to provide another update Tuesday here.
- College of Central Florida is closed through Tuesday. Decisions about a further extended closing will be made by noon Tuesday.
- Daytona State College closed at 12 p.m. Friday, August 30 and will remain closed until further notice for all activities and classes on all campuses, according to the school's website.
- Eastern Florida State College closed at 12 p.m. Thursday, August 29. The College announced Monday that it intends to keep all EFSC campuses closed until a planned reopening next Monday, September 9.
- Florida Gateway College will cancel classes and close residence halls and all center locations through Tuesday, September 3 for Hurricane Dorian. Check the school's website for updated information.
- Florida SouthWestern State College has closed all campuses and centers, including FSW Collegiate High Schools Lee and Charlotte, Tuesday. Until further notice, classes are expected to resume Wednesday.
- Florida State College at Jacksonville all campuses and centers will be closed through Wednesday, September 4.
Indian River State College will remain closed Tuesday until further notice. Find updates here. - Lake-Sumter State College closed Saturday, August 31 at 5:00 p.m. and will remain closed through Wednesday, September 4. All classes and activities, including online classes, are canceled.
- Miami Dade College will be closed through Tuesday. Classes and operations should resume Wednesday, September 4.
- Palm Beach State College closed Friday, August 30 at noon. It is scheduled to reopen on Thursday. All classes and activities are canceled until then.
- Polk State College will be closed through Wednesday, September 4.
- Seminole State College of Florida will be closed through at least Wednesday, September 4. Visit the school's website for further updates.
- Pasco Hernando State College will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Normal operations are expected to start again on Thursday, September 5, unless indicated otherwise.
- South Florida State College will be closed Tuesday and remain closed until further notice.
- St. John's River State College will be closed through Friday, September 6. Classes should resume Monday, September 9. College officials will confirm that reopening with an update at 2 p.m. Saturday.
- Florida Keys Community College will be closed through Tuesday, and all classes are canceled at this point. Only Lagoon Landing residents and authorized College personnel will be allowed on the Key West Campus, with proper ID.
- Valencia College will be closed through Thursday and reopen Friday, September 6. All classes and events are canceled.
- Florida Atlantic University is canceling classes through Wednesday, September 4. A decision about classes and operations for Thursday will be made as information becomes available.
- Florida Gulf Coast University is canceling all classes and events Tuesday. Normal operations return Wednesday.
- Florida International University says all classes are canceled through Tuesday, September 3.
- Florida Polytechnic University will be closed through Wednesday, September 4. The University will return to normal procedure on Thursday, September 5.
- New College of Florida has canceled classes and tutorials on Tuesday and Wednesday. Classes will resume their normal schedule on Thursday, September 5.
- University of Central Florida will remain closed through Thursday, September 5.
- University of South Florida campuses remain closed, and all classes (including online classes) are canceled through Tuesday, September 3. The University expects to reopen Wednesday, based on the most recent forecast.
- University of Florida has canceled classes for Wednesday, but the campus is reopening that day for all facilities. Classes will resume Thursday.
- University of North Florida is closing all residential housing and the Osprey Cafe at noon Tuesday. Students are recommended to leave campus as soon as possible, if they have a safe place to stay. The University says students should continue to monitor alerts.
