BROOKSVILLE, Fla. — Hernando County deputies and fire rescue crews responded to a Brooksville home after receiving a call about a woman being bitten in the face by a dog early Wednesday morning.

Two residents of the home located on Canal Drive rescued a 200-pound bullmastiff from a man in Floral City about a week ago.

According to deputies, the dog started to become aggressive and growling towards all four residents after two of the residents came home from a local bar.

One of the two residents, who rescued the dog, said it had not shown any signs before.

Investigators say one of the other residents leaned down and tried to kiss the dog on the face. The dog bit her in the face on her left cheek and lip area, deputies said.

Another resident intervened and tried to get the dog away from the woman's face. The dog bit the man on his left hand.

The residents got the dog into a bedroom before deputies and fire rescue staff arrived.

Hernando County Fire Rescue transported the woman to a local hospital. She was later sent to a trauma center for her injuries, and she had to be seen by a plastic surgeon.

Animal enforcement took the dog since the residents were no longer able to care for it, deputies said. The dog was sent to Hernando County Animal Services.

Deputies will continue to investigate.
