ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A new exhibit at the Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg is helping bring the artist's largest works come to life.
Visual Magic: Dalí’s Masterworks in Augmented Reality uses technology to animate the painting.
“People have been super excited, it's connecting cross generations,” said Peter Tush, the curator of education at the Salvador Dalí Museum.
Unlike virtual reality that uses a headset to transport you somewhere else, augmented reality uses a device like a smartphone to enhance or change a real experience.
After downloading the museum’s app, simply point your phone’s camera at the painting and watch it come to life.
“You can see a movie that amplifies some of the details that (Dalí) brought into those paintings,” Tush said.
The new exhibit pairs perfectly with Dalí Lives, the artificial intelligence attraction unveiled by the museum in May, continuing the trend of using technology to further explore art.
“Technology is one the biggest opportunities to tell the story of Dalí better, and differently and provide new insights,” Tush said.
If you don’t have a smart device of your own, you can borrow one from the exhibit, free of charge.
Visual Magic: Dalí’s Masterworks in Augmented Reality runs now through November 3.
