HAINES CITY, Fla. — The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said a woman was shot Saturday by a deputy.
Deputies were responding around 5 p.m. to a call of a mother and daughter fighting in a minivan on Carl Boozer Road near Powerline Road.
Investigators said a man called 911 and said he was driving down Carl Boozer Road when he saw two women fighting in the pulled-over minivan. Deputies said the caller heard the victim yell that the suspect was going to shoot her.
When law enforcement arrived on the scene they said they saw the two women fighting in the van.
Deputy Christopher Johnston, 52, reported 47-year-old Wendy Schutte told him 76-year-old Linda Wages had a gun. Wages ignored law enforcement's commands and the victim continued to scream that her mother was going to shoot her, according to investigators.
Investigators said the Wages ducked down and came back up, so the deputy fired at the suspect because he feared for his life and the victim's life.
The suspect was taken to the hospital and treated for non-life-threatening gunshot wounds, the sheriff's office said. Schutte appeared to have injuries associated with being battered, it added.
The sheriff's office said no deputies were injured.
The deputy sheriff will be on paid administrative leave as the shooting is investigated, per standard protocol.
