WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — The Polk County Sheriff’s Office says a woman shot and killed her husband after he attacked her and broke a jar of peppers over her cousin’s head.
It happened around 11 a.m. Friday in Winter Haven.
Based on the preliminary investigation, Sheriff Grady Judd says the husband was arguing with his spouse about an online game she had been playing. During that dispute, he began to “physically batter” her, deputies say.
Investigators say a cousin tried to defend the wife, but the husband hit the cousin over the head with a heavy glass jar – injuring her.
During that part of the fight, the wife managed to pick up a handgun and shoot the husband twice as he came toward her, according to law enforcement. The husband staggered out into the front yard and died.
The husband has been identified as 46-year-old Trevor Goosby.
The wife and cousin were transported to area hospitals. Although the case is still under investigation, Sheriff Judd suggested the women may be protected from prosecution if authorities determine they were defending themselves.
Detectives will listen to 911 calls, but those calls are not being released yet.
Judd said Goosby had been arrested before, but he didn’t appear to have any convictions.
