TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. — A large hole opened up Friday morning on the Tarpon Springs High School campus.
The hole is near the school's culinary building. The hole appears to be close to a sidewalk, and photos show chunks of grass had fallen in the opening filled with dirt.
Pinellas County school district spokesperson Lisa Wolf-Chason said a staff member noticed the hole around 6:45 a.m. Friday before students arrived. The district facility staff is responding and will evaluate what the hole is and how to proceed.
"The school day is continuing as normal here," Wolf-Chason said.
The city of Tarpon Springs staff and the district's civil engineers are investigating the cause of the hole.
Wolf-Chason has since said the area was 'not indicative' of the presence of a sinkhole.
She provided the following statement:
The Ground Penetration Radar test was not indicative of the presence of a sink hole at Tarpon Springs High. The district will pursue additional testing to make absolutely certain the area is stable. The school will continue to keep the area closed to students and staff until follow up testing is complete and we can ensure the area is stable and safe.
The district has also notified parents of the hole, Wolf-Chason said.
The district said the only impact to students is that they are not allowed in the culinary building. Those students are doing different school work in other parts of the school.
