LARGO, Fla. – Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri, the chairman of the state’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Commission, says he has been surprised by just how many missed red flags and system breakdowns led to 17 deaths in Parkland in February.
Gualtieri spoke to 10News on Friday about a variety of school safety-related topics, including what didn’t just go wrong in Broward Co. on Valentine’s Day, but also what went right.
The sheriff added that mental health wasn’t a focus of the commission this year, but it will be the first topic the group takes up in 2019. The commission was tasked with investigating school safety and providing recommendations each year through 2023.
