Emergency and urgency, dialing 911 on a smartphone screen.

Pinellas and Pasco counties are allowing people to text 911 in an emergency.

Texts should only be used when callers are unable to call for help, both counties said.

The counties said calling is still the best option for reaching emergency personnel.

“We are excited to offer this new, life-saving technology to the citizens and visitors of Pasco County,” said Director of Emergency Services Capt. Dan Olds in a news release. “While calling should be your first choice, [texting] 911 is an excellent option should you find yourself in a situation where talking to an operator could jeopardize your safety.”

People seeking emergency assistance cannot send photos, videos or emojis while texting 911.

Telecommunicators can only respond to texts in English.

During an emergency, personnel also recommend including an address and description of the emergency in texts to 911.
