Bomb threat hoax leads to nationwide evacuations, including around Tampa Bay

The FBI is working with local law enforcement agencies to figure out who was behind non-credible threats sent to businesses, schools and other organizations around the United States.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Investigators believe bomb threats emailed to schools, businesses and government buildings were all a giant hoax.

Police in New York City said the emails appear to have been meant to cause widespread disruption and coerce people into sending money.

Some of the messages included a subject line that read: "Think Twice."

Many of these non-credible threats were made to addresses in Florida.

At least six of them were sent to locations in Tampa, and four more were sent to places in St. Petersburg.

"We do not believe the public is in danger, but we are working with our law enforcement partners to share and investigate these threats thoroughly," St. Pete police wrote in a statement.

No actual bombs have been found.

"We are aware of the recent bomb threats made in cities around the country, and we remain in touch with our law enforcement partners to provide assistance," FBI Spokesperson Andrea Aprea told 10News. "As always, we encourage the public to remain vigilant and to promptly report suspicious activities which could represent a threat to public safety."

FBI agents are spearheading the national investigation. They are working with law enforcement agencies from as far away as Alaska, where threats were reportedly received.
