End of watch: Tampa police K-9 Chesney dies a week before retirement

Tampa police said the beloved K-9 had served since 2010 and was set to retire next week.

TAMPA, Fla. -- K-9 Chesney was responsible for apprehending numerous suspects and serving as an explosive detection dog at venues around Tampa Bay.

The beloved K-9 died from natural causes on Tuesday, Tampa police said. He was set to retire next week.

Police said Chesney had been serving the city of Tampa since October 2010. He could often be seen at Tampa Stadium and Amalie Arena with his partner, Officer Ryan Flannigan, doing searches for any explosives.

Tampa police said K-9 Chesney will be remembered as a hero.
