A Fort Myers police officer is in the hospital after being shot Saturday night on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

On Sunday, the department identified the wounded officer was Officer Adam Jobbers-Miller. As of Sunday afternoon, police said he is listed in critical but stable condition.

In a post on their Instagram account, Fort Myers police said the officer "is in critical yet stable condition and still needs continued prayers."

"Thank you for the overwhelming response of kind words and help from multiple agencies during this tragic time," the post reads.

The shooting happened around 7:30 p.m. near the Marathon Gas Station at 3915 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

The officer was in surgery at Lee Memorial Hospital.

"Pray for him," Fort Myers police spokesman Mitch Haley said.

Mayor Randall Henderson is in Asheville, North Carolina and was briefed by phone about the situation, he said. His thoughts were with the officer, he said. "We're holding our breath while he struggles for his life."

Fort Myers police Chief Derrick Diggs said a suspect is in custody. He declined to elaborate further.

The circumstances leading up to the shooting are unknown. Two police cruisers are stationed outside of Lee Memorial's emergency room. And there's a large police presence there.

"Every law enforcement agency is in there; it just shows you how strong we are," said Fort Myers City Councilman Johnny Streets. "We're going to keep the officer in our prayers," Streets said. "I hope the officer pulls through. That's my hope and prayer."

Streets said he heard sirens and helicopters shortly before receivng a call from City Manager Saeed Kazemi.

Kazemi called all of the council members to inform them of the shooting, Streets said.

"Supposedly there was some return fire and the suspect was hit," Streets said.

Lee County Undersheriff Carmine Marceno was also at the hospital, but declined to comment out of respect for the officer's family.

Streets remarked that this is close to 10 years after the shooting death of Fort Myers police Officer Andrew Widman, who was killed on July 18, 2008.

Chief Diggs said that MLK Boulevard between Michigan Link and Veronica Shoemaker will be closed for the night and likely into the morning.
