COLUMBUS, Ga. -- The little tan stray looked like it had been hit by a car when biker Jarrett Little spotted it.

CBS News reported that Little was with a group of fellow mountain cyclists near Columbus, Ga. when they saw the thin dog had road rash and a broken leg. They told CBS they gave the dog food and water, but knew they couldn't just leave him in the woods.

They didn't have a car to take the dog anywhere, just a bike. So Little lifted the pup onto his back and rode back into town to get the dog to a veterinarian.

Little told CBS that once they got back into town, they ran into Andrea Shaw, who was there on a business trip. After they told her about how they find the dog, Little said Shaw took the dog off their hands and paid for him to have his leg repaired.

She also found an organization that could help the pup get back to Maine to live with her, Little told CBS.

Shaw named the dog Columbo -- Bo, for short -- and took him back to Maine. She posted an update on Bo last week on Facebook, saying he had to have 25 staples in his leg after getting four pins to stabilize fractures.

The photo of Little carrying Bo on his back spread quickly, so Shaw made the dog a Facebook page -- Adventures of Columbo.

On July 12, she posted on the page as Bo, "I'm so lucky Jarrett Little likes to bike! He and his friends found me outside Columbus. They gave me some snacks and water. Then Jarrett gave me a lift into town. Normally I would've loved the walk - but my left hind leg was broken and a toe on my right front was also broke."
