THONOTOSASSA, Fla. - All school buses in Hillsborough County now have seatbelts.

Over the summer, the district added 100 new buses to their fleet which was enough to phase out the oldest buses without seatbelts.

Each seat has three lap belts to accommodate three children. The district is asking parents to help the safety effort by encouraging and teaching their children to put their seatbelt on when getting on the school bus. Bus drivers will also encourage students to buckle up.

On average, a Hillsborough County school bus is 8 years old, down from 12 last year.

Florida is only one of six states with a seat belt law. Florida law says that all buses purchased after 2000 needs to be equipped with seatbelts.

10News found most school buses across the Bay Area have seatbelts.
