Tampa murder suspect Mikese Morse pleads not guilty in court

Prosecutors have 45 days to decide if they will pursue the death penalty.

The Tampa man accused of intentionally running over a family riding bicycles in June pleaded not guilty Friday morning.

Mikese Morse, 30, is charged with premeditated first degree murder.

Morse and his parents appeared at Friday's arraignment. His parents have previously claimed their son is mentally ill, and they say the system failed him.

A court-appointed doctor has been assigned to evaluate Morse's mental competency. The doctor's findings are due on Aug. 22, and Morse will return to court for a hearing on Aug. 27.

Prosecutors have 45 days to decide if they will pursue the death penalty.

Last week, the judge allowed Morse to give up his public defender and hire a private attorney instead.

Prosecutors say Morse purposely drove into the family on a bike path on June 24 near New Tampa Boulevard and Wood Sage Drive. Pedro Aguerreberry, 42, was killed in the crash, which also injured his two young sons. Police say Morse left the scene.

Just hours before the fatal crash, Instagram videos appeared to show Morse threatening to kill people.
