RIVERVIEW, Fla. -- Despite deputies' calls to have a suspect lower his weapon, the sheriff says they were forced to shoot the man, killing him.
A woman called authorities just after 3 a.m. Friday at her home in the area of Highway 301 and Estates Del Sol Drive when she found her estranged husband, Tim Gohann Braun, inside, Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said.
Deputies Joshua Berrios and Danette Brennan responded in kind, locating Braun, 60, in a neighbor's yard.
It was dark outside at the time, said Chronister, but deputies noticed objects in his hand. One was a can of beer with a koozie, which he threw, the sheriff said.
The other object turned out to be a gun, he continued.
"Unfortunately, the only option they had was firing at the estranged husband, striking him multiple times," Chronister said.
Berrios has a prior use of force incident on his record, dating to June 26, 2016, in an incident when a man allegedly pulled a handgun out of his shorts and raised it toward deputies.
Braun had a prior criminal record for robbery and other crimes in Texas.
