HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla.— An off-duty Pinellas County deputy witnessed an alleged drunk driver heading the wrong way down U.S. 41 in Ruskin.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Wendel James, 35, was driving more than 100 miles-per-hour in the wrong direction when he side-swiped another vehicle drive by Colleen Switt.

"I notice a pair of headlines coming straight towards me," Switt said.

Her vehicle spun-out into the grass in the median while James continued to drive in the wrong way, law enforcement said. But, he eventually stopped down the street and waited for police.

"At first I was a little offended, you're not gonna come out, you might of just killed someone," Switt added.

It wasn't until an off-duty deputy made a U-turn and blocked James' way that he finally stopped, according to troopers.

James was arrested and charged with DUI involving property damage, reckless driving and leaving the scene of a crash.

FHP always says it's best to keep right at night because wrong way drivers will usually be in the left hand lane.
