Body of missing kayaker found in Scott Lake

He was kayaking with his girlfriend when their kayak took on water, then capsized.

LAKELAND, Fla. - The body of a missing 34-year-old kayaker was found in Scott Lake, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.

Charles Stewart, of East Myrtle Street, was kayaking with his girlfriend at about 2:40 a.m. Monday when their kayak took on water, then capsized, the sheriff's office said.

They did not have life jackets on them and there was "an unknown amount of alcohol consumption," the sheriff's office said.

Stewart's body was found about 12 hours later, approximately 150 yards from the dock, in 10 feet of water. There were no signs of trauma and his body was taken to the medical examiner's office for an autopsy, the sheriff's office said..

"Sometimes these type of searches can take a few days," Sheriff Grady Judd said in a statement. "Our divers, along with other teams and FWC did a great job in finding Mr. Stewart's body, but it's not the ending we had hoped for."
