NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. -- A motorcyclist and a pedestrian were killed Saturday night when they collided on U.S. Highway 19 at Palmetto Road.

A 41-year-old man from St. Petersburg was driving a 2012 Honda motorcycle traveling north on U.S. 19 in the center lane approaching Palmetto Road. New Port Richey police said an unknown male pedestrian was attempting to cross the highway from west to east and not in a designated crosswalk.

The motorcycle hit the pedestrian when the pedestrian crossed the northbound lanes in front of the vehicle. Police said the pedestrian and the driver were both pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said speed does not appear to be a factor, and it is unknown whether alcohol or drugs contributed to the crash. The investigation is ongoing.

The pedestrian could not immediately be identified so next of kin has not been notified.
