Fla. deputy hurt in head-on crash after armed carjacking

A Martin County deputy was hurt in this crash.

HOBE SOUND, Fla. (CBS12) — A deputy was hurt after a head-on crash near Seminole Pratt Whitney Road and Bridge Road Friday afternoon, the Martin County Sheriff's Office said.

The crash stemmed from an armed carjacking at Lake Worth Road and Swain Boulevard in Greenacres and the subsequent pursuit, according to Palm Beach County deputies.

The Martin County Sheriff's Office held a press conference just before 5 p.m.

Carmenate then fired rounds at a Martin County deputy, Snyder said. One bullet hit five inches below the window. Carmenate then hit a detective's parked vehicle so hard, the vehicle rolled over and did a complete 360.

"My first concern is always my deputies, my second is getting my hands on the fleeing felon," Snyder said.

Carmenate tried to flee south, but the stop sticks were out, according to Snyder. He tried changing directions two or three times before finally heading north on Seminole Pratt.

"The suspect is lucky to be alive after coming into Martin County," Snyder said.

A Martin County Martin County Sheriff's Office helicopter landed at St. Mary's Medical Center and two people escorted the deputy into the hospital.

The deputy was who was injured has been identified as Detective Jason Fleming of the Criminal Investigations Division, according to the Martin County Sheriff's Office. Fleming was treated and released with several bruises and abrasions.
