City finally removes Hurricane Irma debris from West Tampa brownfield site

Neighbors were frustrated that they were never notified the debris would be stored in their community for an extended amount of time.

TAMPA, Fla. -- City officials have agreed to two weekends of neighborhood sweeps and cleanups in West Tampa after large piles of debris from Hurricane Irma were left for weeks in a maintenance yard near the Hillsborough River.

"The older people that stay next to that debris pile said they had problems with their allergies; there was fugitive dust," said West Tampa Community Redevelopment Area Chairman Joe Robinson.

Neighbors were frustrated that they were never notified the debris would be stored in their community for an extended amount of time. The yard is also a designated brownfield site, meaning there could already be contamination in the area.

Robinson contacted the city to expedite the process of removing the debris after neighbors had no luck.

Malcom Kiner, Tampa's CRA manager, said the city agreed to do a neighborhood cleanup for the mess left in the area.

For the next two Fridays and Saturdays, West Tampa CRA residents can leave household items like furniture and appliances at their curb for the city to pick up.

A neighborhood cleanup will be held next Saturday. Lunch will be provided.
