The Pasco County Sheriff's Office said "an unconfirmed report of a possible kidnapping" Tuesday was unfounded.

It allegedly in the area of Humboldt Avenue and Glenburn Court in New Port Richey.

According to a press release, the "possible kidnapping" happened around 3:35 p.m. Deputies said it was reported by a 9-year-old girl who was walking her dog. She allegedly said she saw a kidnapping.

The alleged victim was described as a 7- to 9-year-old girl. Investigators were told a man driving a black or dark blue van with a white stripe got out and grabbed the girl. The shirt in the photo below was allegedly left on the ground after the van drove away, the sheriff's office said.

"The information has not been confirmed as we are actively investigating these allegations," the sheriff's office said.

Later, the office issued a statement saying, "The report of the kidnapping has been determined to be unfounded."

Deputies said there were inconsistencies in the girl's story, and the girl eventually admitted she made up the story.

The sheriff's office said it is talking with the girl and her family to determine why she would make up a story like this.

A sheriff's official said the agency reacted as it should, and thanked the media for reporting the story.
