St. Pete library officially renamed in honor of Obama

The city of St. Petersburg has officially renamed its main library to honor the 44th president of the United States.

The city of St. Petersburg has officially renamed its main library to honor the 44th president of the United States.

Officials approved the name change after a public hearing Thursday.

On April 5, St. Petersburg City Council members unanimously approved renaming the library on 9th Avenue North, but the final step was Thursday's hearing.

“Highlighting Barack Obama’s extraordinary story and history-making presidency in this way will inspire generations of young people in St. Pete and will complement the city buildings and other amenities that bear the name of local trailblazers," St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman said April 5. "I am looking forward to unveiling the name change and cutting the ribbon on what will prove to be an exciting and innovative hub for learning in our city."

Structural upgrades will include:

  • 42 Parking Spaces
  • Complete fire sprinkler system
  • ADA compliant restrooms
  • Rear patio renovation & outdoor gathering space
  • Reconfiguring interior spaces with new programming area
