State Attorney deems shooting involving Largo officer a "justifiable homicide"

On Friday, the 6th Judicial Circuit delivered its findings in the shooting investigation involving Largo Police Ofc. Matthew Steiner.

Largo, Fla. — LARGO, Fla. -- A shooting that took place with a Largo police officer at a Wawa gas station last month is being called a "justifiable homicide," by the Office of State Attorney.

On Friday, the 6th Judicial Circuit delivered its findings in the shooting investigation involving Largo Police Ofc. Matthew Steiner.

The State Attorney found that "...the death of Linus Phillip Jr. was the result of having been shot by Ofc. Matt Steiner in the legal performance of his duty and the shooting was Justifiable Homicide, pursuant to Florida Statute Section 776.012."

The investigation. which is still active, began after the March 23 shooting before which, police say Phillips tried to pin Steiner between the gas tank and a parking lot barrier.

In a statement released shortly after the incident, Largo police said "Ofc. Matthew Steiner, a seven year veteran of the department, fired several shots in self-defense, hitting the suspect."
