SARASOTA, Fla. -- Investigators are determining whether human remains found Monday afternoon on the 1900 block of Gillespie Avenue are that of Jabez Spann.

The location is less than a mile from where Spann last was seen. Family members showed up to the scene as investigators began their work, hoping to get some answers.

However, it could be some time.

"At this time, there is no way to tell," Sarasota police spokesperson Genevieve Judge said in a statement. "It’s too early in the investigation. Identifying human remains can take time.

"The Sarasota Police Department is working diligently to identify the individual."

Children playing near a small body of water around 3:30 p.m. found the skeletal remains, police said.

Spann, 14, disappeared on Labor Day after he was last seen walking home. His family believed his disappearance was in retaliation for him witnessing a murder.

A reward for information on Spann's whereabouts had reached $50,000.
