LARGO, Fla. - One person was shot and killed by a Largo police officer during a traffic stop, the department said.

The incident took place at the Wawa store, 1215 N. Missouri Ave., at 5:55 p.m.

"The suspect driver attempted to pin the officer between his vehicle and the gas pumps and barriers in the store parking lot," the department said in a statement. "Ofc. Matthew Steiner, a seven year veteran of the department, fired several shots in self-defense, hitting the suspect."

Steiner was taken to Morton Plant Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The suspect, whose identity police said was not confirmed, was taken to Largo Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
