Tampa police seek driver in fatal hit-and-run

Police say a man pushed his wife out of the way, and ended up being hit himself.
Police identified the people leaving the fatal crash scene as Miriam Marti-Benning and Tracy Evereth Wood.

TAMPA, Fla. -- Tampa police detectives are asking the public to help identify a driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run crash that happened Saturday.

About 12:20 p.m., officers were called to the 4000 block of West Hillsborough Avenue. There they found Felix De la Uz, 80, dead.

Witnesses said a white Honda Civic was heading west on Hillsborough when, for unknown reasons, it left the roadway, hitting a sign, an electrical box, and De la Uz.

Witnesses said De la Uz pushed his wife out of the way of the oncoming vehicle, saving her life at the cost of his own.

The Honda came to a stop 500 feet later, and the occupants left the scene. Nearby surveillance cameras show the suspects walking between nearby buildings.

The driver is a white or Hispanic male, 5-foot-4, and last seen wearing a white tank top, dark shorts and dark shoes

The passenger is a white female, 5-foot-4 with blonde hair, and last seen wearing a green shirt and jeans
