SPRING HILL, Fla. - It’s our favorite part of the week!

Friday leads us into the weekend, but it’s also when we showcase our 10News School of the Week powered by Duke Energy Florida. This week we spent time on the campus of Mary Giella Elementary in Pasco County.

The focus at this school is growing the whole child. Academics are important, but so are the other influences that shape these dolphins.

Students can participate in a variety of clubs on campus geared towards their interests, or even subject areas they might not gain exposure to if it wasn’t for the school.

What’s truly unique is each one of the clubs only exists because of the willingness of teachers and staff to volunteer their time. They will come in early or stay late on their own time to make these clubs happen. The students love the opportunity to learn while having fun.

The art, music and P.E. teachers also mentor students needing a little more attention at the school. They will meet with their mentees once a week, but also check in on them daily.

Classroom teachers will identify potential mentees that could be based on behavior issues, struggling academics or a less than favorable home life. Since the program’s inception, teachers have noted a positive impact in their classrooms.

It’s not just teachers and staff investing in these children. The community is committed as well. Local groups donate food to their pantry, clothing and school supplies for the students and even rewards for the positive behavior system.

Without the commitment of everyone, these students could be left behind.

What’s happening on this campus is just one reason why Mary Giella Elementary is our 10News School of the Week powered by Duke Energy Florida.
